Power for your camera
How can CCTV work without mains power?
If you need security in a field, yard, gateway, livestock area, construction site or remote building, you do not always need a fixed mains power supply.
A 4G camera can connect through the mobile network, while the camera itself can be powered by a built-in solar battery system, a 12V leisure battery, a larger solar power kit or standard mains power where available.
The best option depends on the camera you choose, how often the area is used, whether you need regular live viewing or recording, and whether the site has reliable sunlight.

Clear choices for off-grid sites
The reality of powering CCTV without mains power.
Running a security camera without mains power is absolutely possible, but it is important to choose the right setup for your site. Solar and battery-powered cameras are ideal for remote locations, but they do work differently to a camera plugged into a permanent power supply.
Solar depends on daylight
Solar works best when the panel has a clear view of the sky and receives regular daylight. In the UK, performance is naturally better in summer and more limited in winter when the days are shorter.
Winter uses more power
Cameras usually use more power at night because the infrared lights are active. In winter, this means the camera may use more power at the same time as the solar panel receives less sunlight.
Batteries may need topping up
Leisure battery setups are very useful for temporary or remote sites, but the battery will need checking, recharging or swapping. This is especially important during colder, darker months.
Indoor cameras use more night vision
Dim sheds may use infrared night vision during the day as well as at night. Factor that extra power use into your battery and solar planning.
Choosing the right trade-off.
A self-contained Solar 4G Camera is a compact option where its battery, panel and features suit your site. Our 12V cameras offer different viewing and zoom options but need a suitable separate power supply.
Winter planning: A larger solar kit may still need a battery top-up or backup, depending on daylight, camera usage and site conditions.
